Value Stream Product & Quality Engineer

Full Time Professional Houston, TX, US

8 days ago Requisition ID: 1656

Role Summary/Purpose

The Product & Quality Engineer will be a member of the B-Series Value Stream, reporting to the B-Series Value Stream Manager, and is responsible for the mechanical design integrity and quality performance of the value stream’s products.

This role owns the technical evaluation and resolution of product-related issues in production, including determination of design, manufacturing, or supplier root causes, and drives corrective actions accordingly. The engineer serves as the primary point of contact for non-conforming products and leads high-impact problem solving efforts to eliminate recurring issues and improve performance across safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

The role operates with full ownership of mechanical design changes within the value stream and is accountable for ensuring the product meets customer requirements while supporting a Toyota Production System-based, zero defect culture, where customer focus and respect for people are foundational.

  • Own the mechanical design integrity of B-Series products in the value stream, ensuring performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements are met
    • Maintain accuracy and control of drawings, specifications, and BOMs supporting B-Series products
  • Evaluate production, field, and supplier issues to determine root cause ownership (design, manufacturing, or supplier) and drive resolution to closure
  • Own and execute engineering changes (ECOs, drawing updates, BOM updates) required to correct product issues or improve performance
  • Serve as the primary technical authority within the value stream for product-related issues, providing direct support to manufacturing operations and resolving design-related questions
  • Own disposition and resolution of non-conforming product generated internally or received from suppliers
  • Serve as the decision authority and escalation point for NCR/MRB within the value stream, ensuring timely and appropriate disposition aligned with engineering and quality requirements
  • Partner with Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) to resolve supplier-related defects and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained
  • Ensure containment, root cause analysis, and corrective actions are completed for all quality issues
  • Identify and prioritize high-impact production and quality issues based on business impact
  • Lead structured root cause investigations using standard problem solving methods (5 Why, Fishbone, etc.)
  • Drive permanent corrective actions that eliminate recurrence rather than implementing temporary fixes
  • Lead and support Kaizen activities focused on:
    • First Pass Yield improvement
    • Defect reduction
    • Cost reduction
  • Provide direct, hands-on engineering support to the production line to resolve technical issues and support flow
  • Ensure alignment between design intent and manufacturing execution
  • Evaluate product designs for ease-of-manufacture, robustness, and cost effectiveness
  • Support troubleshooting of mechanical issues in assembly, testing, and field performance
  • Support First Article Inspection (FAI) and validation of supplier components
  • Evaluate supplier changes and ensure no negative impact to form, fit, or function
  • Provide technical input on supplier design, materials, and component performance

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • 8+ years of experience in a mechanical design role within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Mechanical design principles
    • Manufacturing processes (machining, casting, assembly, etc.)
    • Material selection and machine elements
  • Experience with:
    • 3D and 2D CAD creation (Creo and AutoCAD or equivalent)
    • BOM management and engineering change processes
    • Root cause analysis and structured problem solving
  • Experience working cross-functionally in a manufacturing or value stream environment

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated experience applying Toyota Production System, Lean, or continuous improvement principles
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with focus on elimination of root causes
  • Ability to prioritize work based on business impact
  • Strong communication skills across engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams
  • Ability to operate as the technical decision maker within a value stream
  • High ownership mindset with accountability for product and quality outcomes
