Job summary

American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) seeks a front-end developer to craft accessible, high-performing web experiences across AAOS CMS and related platforms.

You will translate UX wireframes and designs into clean HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript, collaborating with product, marketing, content teams, and backend engineers. This hybrid role is based in Rosemont, Illinois with some remote work and projects.

Qualifications

Digital Experience, Front-End Development, And CMS Delivery

• Develop and maintain responsive, accessible, high-performing web experiences across the CMS and related AAOS digital platforms.
• Build reusable front-end components, templates, content blocks, styles, and patterns that support consistent, scalable digital delivery.
• Translate UX requirements, wireframes, prototypes, visual designs, and stakeholder needs into clean, maintainable HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• Collaborate with backend engineers on CMS content models, application functionality, integrations, personalization, search, forms, and related platform capabilities.
• Support debugging, release validation, code reviews, documentation, and modernization of existing components and templates.

UX, UI, And Digital Experience Design

• Partner with stakeholders to understand audiences, user goals, business objectives, content needs, workflows, and pain points.
• Create or contribute to user flows, site maps, wireframes, prototypes, and interface designs appropriate to project scope.
• Apply UX, interaction-design, responsive-design, and information-architecture practices to improve navigation, comprehension, task completion, and engagement.
• Provide practical guidance on layout, hierarchy, typography, imagery, calls to action, content presentation, and brand-aligned interface patterns.

Rapid Solutions, Integrations, and AI-Enabled Prototyping

• Create lightweight prototypes, proofs of concept, and rapid digital solutions that help stakeholders evaluate ideas, improve workflows, and accelerate decision-making.
• Connect CMS capabilities, APIs, automation, analytics, and related platforms to improve digital experiences and operational efficiency.
• Use AI-assisted tools responsibly to support design exploration, development, documentation, testing, content-structure recommendations, and digital experience improvements.
• Partner with stakeholders to evaluate where AI-enabled capabilities could improve user experience, authoring workflows, personalization, support processes, or internal productivity.

Accessibility, Quality, and Performance

• Apply accessibility-first practices throughout design and development, including semantic markup, keyboard navigation, focus management, color contrast, form labeling, and appropriate component behavior.
• Help ensure digital experiences align with applicable accessibility standards and organizational expectations, including WCAG 2.2 AA where appropriate.
• Support accessibility reviews, responsive testing, browser compatibility testing, usability validation, release readiness, and front-end performance improvements.
• Work with QA, engineering, and content teams to document, prioritize, and remediate defects affecting usability, accessibility, visual consistency, or cross-device behavior.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration

• Serve as a consultative technology partner, translating business needs into practical digital solutions and clearly communicating design and technical trade-offs.
• Facilitate discovery conversations, design reviews, working sessions, and feedback discussions with technical and nontechnical participants.
• Collaborate with marketing, communications, education, product, analytics, content, QA, and engineering teams throughout delivery.
• Help content authors and business partners understand CMS components, templates, design patterns, platform capabilities, and appropriate usage.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, web development, human-computer interaction, graphic design, digital media, or a related field; or equivalent education, training, and experience.
• Three or more years of professional experience developing responsive web applications, content-rich websites, CMS-driven experiences, or digital products.
• Strong proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, modern JavaScript, responsive development, and maintainable front-end implementation.
• Experience building reusable UI components, page templates, design patterns, or component libraries.
• Ability to translate UX/UI designs, wireframes, prototypes, business requirements, and stakeholder feedback into polished front-end and CMS experiences.
• Working knowledge of UX, visual design, information architecture, usability, responsive behavior, and accessibility principles.
• Experience collaborating with nontechnical stakeholders to clarify goals, communicate options, and deliver practical solutions.
• Experience with source control and collaborative development practices, including pull requests, code reviews, and issue tracking.
• Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, collaboration, and prioritization skills.
• Ability to use AI-assisted tools responsibly to improve productivity, support prototyping, accelerate documentation, or strengthen development and testing workflows.
• CMS, content model, template, component, block, or authoring-experience development; Optimizely/Episerver experience is a plus.
• Front-end engineering depth, including component-based architecture, TypeScript, modern JavaScript tooling, Angular, React, Razor, C#, .NET, or ASP.NET Core.
• User-centered problem solving with strong UX, visual design, interaction-design, information-architecture, and accessibility judgment.
• Experience using analytics, user feedback, accessibility testing, WCAG 2.2 AA, Section 508 considerations, performance optimization, or Core Web Vitals to improve digital experiences.
• Rapid prototyping, experimentation, proof-of-concept development, and solution validation to help teams evaluate ideas before larger investment.
• Experience with headless CMS, APIs, search, personalization, analytics, experimentation, or content-delivery platforms.
• Responsible use of AI-assisted development, prototyping, automation, intelligent search, chatbot concepts, personalization, or content-experience tools.
• Clear communication, stakeholder consultation, requirements discovery, and collaboration across business, design, content, product, QA, and engineering teams.
• Experience in a membership association, healthcare, education, nonprofit, publishing, or other content-intensive organization.
• Attention to detail, commitment to quality, continuous learning, and willingness to improve platforms, patterns, and processes.

Desired

Salary Range: $102,000-$105,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
