Job summary

The County of Santa Barbara is seeking an Inventory and Supply Coordinator for all locations in Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office. The role manages linen, clothing, supplies, and the detainees' property room, coordinates deliveries, and supports multiple bureaus and custody facilities.

Responsibilities include organizing stock, recording inventory, supervising detainees in light maintenance, operating yard equipment, and assisting public and staff with inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Combination of training, education, and/or experience that provides required knowledge and abilities.
  • Knowledge: English grammar and usage sufficient for records and reports, basic math for orders and inventory.
  • Ability: Understand and follow oral and written instructions; work independently; keep accurate records; use computer daily; perform minor building maintenance; communicate effectively with inmates, juveniles, and public; maintain appropriate relationships; safely operate forklift (as assigned).

  • Distribute goods, arrange supplies on shelves, maintain inventory records, secure items in the supply room.
  • Store and record detainees’ or inmates’ clothing and bulk property.
  • Supervise detainees in housekeeping, painting, cleaning, light repair, and general grounds maintenance.
  • Operate yard equipment for grounds maintenance and assist with maintenance requests.
  • Lift, move, and transport heavy and bulky items.
  • Write simple reports and memoranda on lost property and disciplinary issues.
  • Enter inventory data into computer system.
  • Issue office supplies and equipment, manage mail handling and courier services.
  • Transport vehicles to county garage and other locations; monitor equipment inventory and condition; arrange maintenance; maintain vehicle service records.
  • Assist the public in person or on the phone.
  • Assist food service workers as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Overview

Additional Requirements
  • Physically able to lift heavy items up to 50 lbs above and below shoulder height, stand, walk, reach, and bend continuously.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Successfully complete a one-year probationary period.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, toxic substances.

Supplemental Information

Selection Process
  • Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine applicants meeting employment standards.
  • Qualified candidates invited to submit Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ); failure to submit by deadline results in disqualification.
  • Online Computerized Skills Assessment; must score at least 70% to be placed on employment list.
  • Candidates with a score ≥70% placed on an employment list for a minimum of three months.
Background Investigation Process

Polygraph examination and in-depth background investigation. Additional requirements include live scan fingerprinting and disaster service worker designation.

Background Disqualifiers
  • Felony conviction within five years in California or state classified as felony.
  • Adult felony or misdemeanor conviction may be disqualifying.
  • Current probation or parole.
  • Conviction or petitions for sex crime.
  • Recent illegal drug use or possession; nondisclosure is disqualifying.
  • Unfavorable work history, poor credit history, history of domestic violence, dishonesty.
Veteran Preference

Veteran preference credit applicable: 5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans; applicable within five years of discharge or other qualifying criteria.
