Job summary

The City of Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department is seeking qualified individuals for the Water Distribution team as a Utility Systems Lead Technician - CDL. Two positions available with 4x10 shifts: Mon-Thu 4 AM–2:30 PM or Tue-Fri 5 AM–3:30 PM.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, 4 years of construction/maintenance experience (water/wastewater preferred), ADEQ Grade 2 Water Distribution, and a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six months.

Qualifications

• 4 years of construction, maintenance and repair experience including equipment operation; water distribution/wastewater experience preferred.
• ADEQ Grade 2 Water Distribution Certification required on hire/promotion.
• Valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six months of hire/promotion.
• Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification within six months if assigned to Hydrant Meter Division.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Job description

The City of ChandlerPublic Works & Utilities Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our Water Distribution team as a Utility Systems Lead Technician - CDL. There are two open positions. One position is scheduled to work 4x10’s, Monday thru Thursday, 4 AM to 2:30 PM. The second Lead position is scheduled to work 4x10s, Tuesday thru Friday, 5 AM to 3:30 PM.

This opportunity is only open to: 1) current regular City of Chandler employees, 2) those participating in a city approved internship or apprenticeship program, and 3) temporary employees who are paid through the city payroll system. Current City of Chandler employees may only hold one position and are not eligible for additional part-time or secondary positions within the City of Chandler.

Who we are?

Chandler was the first city in Arizona to receive accreditation of our water and wastewater operations by the American Public Works Association, the toughest accreditation to achieve in the industry. The Utilities Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s water treatment plant, 32 water wells, and 19 booster station facilities and share another water plant with the Town of Gilbert. The Utility also operates wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure, including industrial wastewater/ brine reduction and three wastewater facilities. We treat over 64 million gallons of fresh water and treat over 30 million gallons of wastewater per day to class A+ reclaimed water to meet irrigation and industrial demands. Our water is received from four primary water sources: Salt River, Verde River, Colorado River and ground water supplied by our extensive well field facilities. We also use advanced treatment processes to recycle over 7 million gallons of industrial wastewater and return it back for industrial reuse. Service is provided to the City of Chandler residential, commercial, and industrial users by a network of 1,224 miles of active water mains, 942 miles of active sewer mains, and 92 miles of reclaimed water mains.

Who we are looking for

Our new team member will have a passion for customer service, teamwork, and collaboration. We are looking for someone to serve as a lead, provide technical advice and direction, and perform a wide variety of advanced and specialized activities in installing, maintaining, and repairing water distribution equipment and systems. Plus, responds to emergency situations; oversees and sets up traffic control; participates in the mandatory standby rotation.

Minimum qualifications

• A High School Diploma or GED; and
• 4 years of experience in construction, maintenance and repair work to include equipment operation and at least 2 years of experience in water distribution or wastewater collection system maintenance: and
• ADEQ Grade 2 Water Distribution Certification upon hire or promotion; and
• A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement, within six (6) months of hire or promotion; and
• Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification (when assigned to the Hydrant Meter Division) within six (6) months of hire or promotion; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Desired qualifications

• Prior experience as a Lead.

This is a regular full-time position, subject to a 6-month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment DOT drug and alcohol test and a driving record check as a condition of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results.
