Job summary

The University of Chicago is seeking a Utilities Plant Operator to operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, chillers, and associated equipment in the Steam & Chiller Plants. You will follow university standards, document readings, and coordinate maintenance or repairs as needed.

Responsibilities include adjusting controls, inspecting systems for malfunctions, and ensuring water and steam treatment. This role requires safety awareness and the ability to work with complex instrumentation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two years chiller plant operation experience or equivalent training preferred.
• City of Chicago Stationary Engineer’s License or the ability to obtain within two years.
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification or the ability to obtain within two years.
• ASME Welding Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain boilers and chiller systems.
• Monitor and adjust fuel feed, draft openings, water level, and steam pressure.
• Inspect and service turbines, pumps, motors, and related equipment.
• Record readings and maintain equipment logs.
• Troubleshoot equipment and perform repairs as needed.
