Job summary

City of Virginia Beach’s Public Utilities Department is hiring for Utility Mechanic I/II roles within the Meter Operations team. The positions involve manual labor, meter maintenance, and use of hand tools, with safety protocols and iPad-based work orders.

CDL progression is required where applicable, and overtime may be required to meet operational needs. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of related experience, plus a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 1 year of utility maintenance or labor experience.
• Valid driver’s license required; obtain CDL Class A Instruction Permit within 6 months and CDL with air brake endorsement within 9 months.
• Must be able to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
• Safety: PPE such as steel-toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves may be required.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labor and excavation in maintenance/repair of water meters.
• Use basic hand tools and maintain safety practices on construction sites.
• Follow written and oral instructions and safety procedures for field work.
• Operate vehicles and small construction equipment; use iPad/work order system.
• Maintain PPE and work in consultation with supervisors and teammates.
• Assist with routine repairs and customer communications as needed.
