Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach’s Public Utilities seeks an Engineer I or II to support water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater projects, reviewing plans, performing design and construction tasks, and ensuring conformance with city and state requirements.

You will lead project management activities, conduct field investigations, and coordinate with departments and outside agencies; after six months, remote work options and flex days may apply, with a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field, or an Associate’s Degree with six years of progressive engineering experience.
• Engineer II requires a Bachelor’s degree with E.I.T. certification and two years of professional experience.

Responsibilities

• Review construction plans for conformity with department and city specifications.
• Serve as project manager and engineer-in-charge for water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater projects.
• Perform contract administration for design and construction projects.
• Conduct field investigations, prepare reports, and maintain records.

This role will prepare and review plans, specifications, estimates, and reports involving the construction, maintenance, and operation of a variety of engineering projects including water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater, to ensure compliance with Public Utilities standards and city, state, and federal requirements.This position will be filled as an Engineer I or II, depending upon the qualifications of the candidate selected.The selected candidate will be part of a team of talented engineers working in the Engineer Division performing a variety of duties of a complex nature related to Water and Sanitary Sewer Engineering Projects.Representatives work duties include but are not limited to:Review construction plans prepared by engineering consultants for conformity with department and city specifications and policies and coordinate with adjacent developments, roads and utilities.Serve as project manager and engineer - in - charge for water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater projects and ensure timely and on-budget design and construction.Perform contract administration for design and construction projects.Conduct field investigations, prepare reports, and maintain project documentation and records.Perform contract administration for projectsConduct field investigations, prepare reports, and maintain project documentation and records.Perform engineering or hydraulic studiesReview of stormwater pollution plan (SWPPP) documents and construction management.Evaluate asset condition and sanitary sewer flow data.Coordinate with City departments, outside agencies, and contractors as necessary.Provide engineering support for Operations and maintenance of Public Utilities facilities.Continually apply independent decision-making abilities.Work from home is available after 6-months, in accordance with City and DPU Engineering Work from home policies, there is also a flex day option.The City offers a generous benefits package such as health, dental and life insurance, retirement and savings plans.
