JOB SUMMARY:
This is manual work in the performance of limited skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. An employee in this class, under the supervision of a foreman or designated supervisor, assists in activities related to installing, maintaining, repairing, servicing, enlarging, and relocating wastewater and storm water facilities. This position is considered essential personnel and requires responding to emergencies as needed within the Department of Public Works.
UTILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I
$22.97/hour
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates equipment such as pickup trucks, sewer cleaning and inspection equipment, air compressors, power mowers, jackhammers, and assists with the installation and maintenance of flow monitoring and TV inspection equipment.
- Uses hand tools like hammers, wrenches, saws, digging irons, and sledgehammers to maintain and repair wastewater and storm water systems.
- Performs preventative and routine maintenance on system structures, mainlines, services, and facilities.
- Cleans system structures, gutters, culverts, and drainage structures.
- Responds to service calls and works to resolve complaints.
- Enters data on work completed using spreadsheets, work order software, and inspection software.
- Reads and understands utility and site plan maps, both paper and electronic.
- Locates and marks underground structures and facilities.
- Works in confined spaces as required.
- Assists with digging and backfilling trenches for pipe work.
- Assists with plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Sets up work zones, pedestrian controls, and flags traffic as needed.
- Hauls refuse, gravel, dirt, trash, and plows snow and salts roads and walkways.
- Performs brush clearing, weed cutting, and spreading sand and salt on hazardous roads.
- Operates air tools and light equipment used in utility maintenance.
- Mixes concrete and mortar.
- Installs and repairs brick and concrete structures.
- Repairs road surfaces with asphalt.
- Performs first echelon maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Communicates effectively with departments and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
- Vehicle Operator’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Maryland State Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within six months.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Completion of workplace training in confined space, first aid/CPR, and electric safety.
- Ability to read and understand instructions, manuals, and memos in English.
- Effective communication skills in English.
- Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software.
- Ability to operate a vehicle safely.
- Experience with heavy equipment, jetting and vacuuming equipment, and plumbing skills.
