Job description

Job Summary

This is manual work involving limited skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. An employee in this role, under supervision, assists with installing, maintaining, repairing, servicing, enlarging, and relocating wastewater and storm water facilities. The position is essential personnel and requires responding to emergencies as needed within the Department of Public Works.

Utility Maintenance Technician I

Salary: $22.97/hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate equipment such as trucks, sewer cleaning tools, compressors, mowers, and assist with installation and maintenance of monitoring and inspection equipment.
  • Use hand tools for maintenance and repair of water and storm water systems.
  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance on related structures and facilities.
  • Clean system structures, gutters, culverts, and drainage structures.
  • Respond to service calls and resolve complaints.
  • Document work using spreadsheets and software.
  • Read and interpret utility and site maps.
  • Locate and mark underground utilities and structures.
  • Work in confined spaces and assist with trench work.
  • Assist with plumbing, setup work zones, and traffic control.
  • Haul materials, plow snow, and spread salt.
  • Operate air tools and equipment for utility maintenance.
  • Mix concrete and repair road surfaces.
  • Perform basic vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and communicate courteously.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Must have a valid vehicle operator's license and Maryland State Flagger Certification or obtain within 6 months.

Skills
  • Ability to complete safety and operational training.
  • Proficiency in reading manuals, writing reports, and effective communication.
  • Basic math skills and computer proficiency in MS Office.
  • Experience with heavy equipment, jetting, vacuuming, and plumbing skills.
Additional Technician Levels

Details for Technician II, III, and IV include increased responsibilities, certifications, experience, and supervisory duties, with corresponding salary increases. Each level requires specific certifications, experience, and skills, including specialized licenses and the ability to operate various heavy equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasional heavier lifts. Work involves outdoor conditions, exposure to mechanical and chemical hazards, confined spaces, and noise. Accommodations may be provided for disabilities.
