Job summary

Spotsylvania County's Utilities/Public Works Department seeks a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to drive heavy trucks, loaders, graders and related machinery in refuse collection, compost processing and land grading. This is a full-time county role based in Virginia with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

The job requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, 2–4 years of heavy equipment experience, and a valid Class B CDL (Virginia) within 6 months; heavy equipment certification is desirable.

  • Valid Class B commercial driver's license (Virginia) within 6 months.
  • Heavy equipment operation certification desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Operate multiple types of heavy equipment for refuse collection, compost processing and land grading.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance and pre/post-operation checks.
  • Fuel, clean, and service trucks and equipment; maintain logs.
  • Assist with training of new employees and respond to emergencies as needed.

Job description

Under general supervision, perform specialized skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized heavy equipment used in the transfer and compaction of refuse and/or the processing of municipal wastewater sludge into marketable compost for the Utilities/Public Works Department. Work involves operating such heavy equipment as heavy trucks, tractors, compactors, loaders, graders, mixers, blowers, screening equipment, etc. Employee is responsible for manipulating such vehicles with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation. Performs minor preventative maintenance on equipment; and performs various duties to assist department maintenance crews. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.

This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.

Applicants must be available to work Sunday through Saturday as needed.

  • Operates one or more types of motorized heavy equipment involved in the collection, compacting, disposal and depositing of refuse, recyclables and debris, and clearing and grading of land and /or the processing of municipal sludge into marketable compost to include: heavy trucks, compactors, tractors, loader, excavators, dump trucks, rubber tire loaders, front end loaders, fork lifts, screening equipment etc. Drives a tandem axle dump truck to haul dirt and equipment spread gravel or deliver compost.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment, making minor repairs, as needed.
  • Fuels and cleans trucks and equipment; utilizes steam cleaning equipment.
  • Assists with minor maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment; checks truck and equipment before and after operation; readies trucks and equipment for scheduled maintenance.
  • Performs general landscaping duties such as mowing the grass, trimming weeds, installing fencing, etc. as needed
  • Maintains a daily logbook for record of hauling and equipment maintenance record on all equipment used in operation.
  • Assists in training new employees on the use of heavy equipment.
  • Transports equipment from site to site.
  • Removes snow from roads and parking lots
  • Polices grounds and picks up litter and debris.
  • Responds to emergency calls as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) to four (4) years of experience in operating heavy equipment; experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Possess or obtain a valid commercial driver's license (Class B) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within a six (6) months of hire.

Heavy Equipment Operation Certification desirable.
