Job summary

City of Apple Valley, MN is seeking a Maintenance Worker II - Utilities to assist the Public Works Supervisor and Superintendent in coordinating daily utility maintenance activities. You will lead crews, prioritize assignments, and ensure safe operation of equipment while addressing customer concerns.

The role requires leadership, SCADA and MS Office skills, and the ability to work extended days with on-call duties.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 18 years of age or older.
• 7,000 hours of experience (~4 years) working in a municipal utilities maintenance division.
• Class B Water Supply Systems Operator certification, or must obtain within six months after appointment.
• Class S.B. Wastewater Collection Systems Operator certification or must obtain within six months after appointment.
• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
• Demonstrated computer skills including SCADA software and Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated successful operation and day-to-day repair of utilities maintenance equipment.
• Working knowledge of appropriate safety regulations and demonstrated ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
• Must be able to comply with Department of Transportation drug testing requirements.
• Possess or be able to obtain and maintain Class B Minnesota driver’s license within six months after appointment.

Responsibilities

• Assist Public Works Supervisor - Utilities and Public Works Superintendent - Utilities in coordinating, scheduling, and assigning daily work crews including prioritizing work assignments; assigning appropriate work crews; reassigning work crews; determining needed supplies, equipment and other support; and monitoring work crews for satisfactory completion of projects.
• Lead work projects within the utilities maintenance division, including coordinating resources, equipment needs, and outside contractual work to ensure timely completion.
• Communicate effectively with the supervisor, division coworkers, City staff, and residents on status of projects, recommendations, and needs.
• Utilize technology applicable to the field and implement available technology to accomplish work tasks.
• Perform all tasks and duties normally assigned within the utilities maintenance division as part of a work crew.
• Train maintenance workers on duties, procedures, and safety for the utilities maintenance division.
• Assure compliance with safety rules and regulations including OSHA standards and City policies.
• Maintain an inventory for the utilities maintenance division to guarantee necessary supplies and equipment.
• Assist in preparing requests for equipment purchases and long-range budgetary needs for the division.
• Assist other maintenance divisions and departments in city-owned property maintenance.
• Keep supervisor informed of matters relevant to responsibilities.
• Perform on-call utility duty on a rotating basis to respond to issues outside normal hours.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the City.
