Job summary

NC State University is seeking a Utilities Distribution Technician to support Main, Centennial, and CBC campuses. The role involves hands-on mechanical and piping work, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on critical utility systems, including steam tunnels and PRVs.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting, welding, installing and testing piping, and aiding in wastewater systems inspections. Strong safety awareness and NC driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
  • Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair equipment such as fans, pumps, receivers, steam lines, condensate lines, and PRVs.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair steam and hot water systems, including traps, strainers, joints, and piping.
  • Utilize welding technologies for torch work and fabricate parts from blueprints or sketches.
  • Install, operate, maintain, and rebuild mechanical pumps, PRVs, and associated piping and equipment.
  • Cut, thread, solder, and assemble piping; connect valves and test lines; replace faulty fittings.
  • Test and certify backflow preventers and conduct fire hydrant flow tests; inspect wastewater systems.
  • Conduct annual inspections of wastewater distribution systems and report findings.

Utilities Distribution Technician Overview

Join NC State University’s Utilities and Engineering team as a Utilities Distribution Technician and play a hands-on role in maintaining the essential infrastructure that keeps our campus operating safely and reliably. This position supports NC State’s Main, Centennial, and CBC campuses, performing skilled mechanical and piping work, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on critical utility systems, including steam tunnels, pump stations, heat exchangers, pressure-reducing valves (PRVs), and grease traps.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from routine maintenance and repairs to new construction, renovations, and welding projects, while helping ensure reliable utility services for research, academic, and animal hospital facilities. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Diagnose and repair equipment such as fans, pumps, receivers, steam lines, condensate lines, and pressure-reducing stations.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair steam and hot water systems, including components like traps, strainers, expansion joints, and piping.
  • Utilize welding technologies for torch work, including welding, brazing, soldering, and cutting, and fabricate parts from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Install, operate, maintain, and rebuild mechanical pumps, PRVs, and associated piping and equipment.
  • Cut, thread, solder, and assemble piping; connect valves and test gas, water, sanitary, and storm lines; eliminate leaks and replace faulty fittings.
  • Test and certify backflow preventers, conduct fire hydrant flow tests, and perform inspections of wastewater collection systems, including grease traps and SSOs.
  • Conduct annual inspections of wastewater distribution systems and report findings to the Environmental Engineer and shop supervisor.
  • Align motors and pumps, set frames, and install related equipment such as fans, PRVs, and turbines for steam generation and control.
  • Serve as backup ORC for wastewater collection system compliance, ensuring adherence to permit requirements.
  • Anticipate, identify, and address customer service needs by balancing multiple priorities, ensuring repairs or solutions meet expectations, and fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including vendors and subcontractors, while proactively developing options, implementing solutions, and verifying customer satisfaction.
Other Responsibilities
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Hours are subject to change to meet the needs of the university.
  • This position is subject to emergency call‑backs, weekend work, and rotational on‑call.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and earplugs.
  • Additional safety equipment includes a respirator, welding leathers, a welding shield, a hard hat, and/or other gear related to the work site.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the maintenance and operation of utility distribution systems, consisting of steam/condensate, chilled water, storm/sanitary sewer and potable water.
  • Heavy equipment experience with- excavator, back hoes and compaction equipment.
  • Experience with steam pressure reducing valves, motors, pumps, air compressors, fans, and assist with maintaining a proper water treatment program.
  • Able to repair and maintain plumbing related systems to include air, gas, water and waste disposal systems.
  • Knowledge of basic torch work to include welding, brazing, cutting, soldering, etc.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License Required.
  • North Carolina Driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • Cross connection/Backflow preventer test certification required within 60 days of hire.
