Job summary

The City of New York Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant Transportation Specialist in Manhattan to assist in traffic studies and citywide traffic programs. Under supervision, you will support projects, conduct field investigations, and evaluate traffic conditions, safety, access, and pedestrian and vehicular operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, urban planning or related field, or math/physical sciences.
• High school diploma with 4 years of technical traffic-program experience.
• Education/experience equivalent to the above qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparation of transportation and traffic studies and citywide traffic programs.
• Conduct field investigations and surveys to evaluate traffic conditions, safety, visibility, access, and operations.
• Assist in studies related to signal installations, signal timing, markings, signage, loading zones, and other traffic control devices.
• Review accident reports, observe locations, analyze traffic flow, and assess operational changes such as street conversions.
• Recommend methods to improve traffic safety and reduce congestion and crashes, including detours when appropriate.
• Prepare detailed reports, diagrams, and sketches documenting field conditions and study findings.
• Assist in work orders and monitor traffic control devices to ensure compliance with standards.
• Collaborate with higher-level staff and stakeholders to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility.
