Job summary

The City of San José's Department of Transportation is seeking Urban Forestry Inspector I/II to help maintain a healthy urban forest through field inspections, data collection, and resident support. This role requires hands-on tree management, strong communication, and collaboration with DOT teams to address community needs.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience; a California driver’s license is required by appointment.

Qualifications

• Education: HS Diploma or equivalent (GED/CA Proficiency Certificate).
• Experience: Two (2) years in tree maintenance/planting in public streets or landscape maintenance.
• Experience: Two (2) years inspecting trees for hazards or trimming needs (Inspector II).
• Possession or ability to obtain CA driver’s license by time of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex fieldwork in urban forestry management and related administrative tasks.
• Apply general principles of professional tree management to inspections and data collection.
• Communicate effectively with residents and service delivery partners to address concerns.
• Collaborate with DOT maintenance and inspection teams to support neighborhood livability.
