Job summary

The City of Indianapolis, Department of Business & Neighborhood Services, seeks a Permit Technician/Building Plans Examiner to provide expertise in plan review and permit issuance, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rezonings, variances, and codes.

The role requires the ability to read blueprints, interpret codes, and communicate effectively with inspectors, contractors, and the public.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required or substituted by one year of related experience for each year of education.
  • Ability to obtain working knowledge of building codes, ordinances, and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with inspectors, contractors, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and issues permits for commercial, industrial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, and procedures.
  • Resolves code and permit interpretations and maintains permit records.
  • Develops reports and participates in process improvements to reduce turnaround times.
  • Assists in training new staff and answers inquiries about codes and procedures.
  • Interacts with various city departments to coordinate permit-related activities.
  • Maintains and updates GIS-related data used by the Permits Division.
