Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Urban Arborist to supervise tree care crews—planting, trimming, insect and disease control, and removal of limbs and debris. The role ensures crew, equipment, and public safety, following instructions and policies while meeting deadlines and assisting others with novel situations.

Ideal candidates hold a CDL, must have chain saw and bucket truck experience, and pursue Arborist Certification within the first year, with strong urban forestry coursework

Qualifications

• Experience using chainsaws to trim or remove trees.
• Experience operating an aerial lift (bucket truck).
• Class A Commercial Driver's License is required.
• Must obtain Arborist Certification within one year of employment.
• Eligibility for Arborist Certification based on arboriculture coursework/experience.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to community by planting trees and educating local schools.
• Guides crew in removal of trees and limbs while ensuring safety.
• Inspects and maintains equipment and performs routine maintenance.
• Performs tree removal/trimming on public property using bucket truck and climbing gear.
• Prioritizes daily work, estimates time, plans routes, and adjusts workload as needed.
• Directs site cleanup and debris removal to keep roadways safe.
