Job summary

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a part-time Education Support Specialist for the Upward Bound program in Tazewell, VA. The role supports students through college access activities, FAFSA guidance, tutoring and college/career planning, with occasional evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or related field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings/weekends.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple sites.
• Willingness to transport students in college vehicles on trips.
• Excellent written communication skills evidenced in materials.
• Knowledge of college access and financial aid processes (FAFSA, scholarships).

Responsibilities

• Upward Bound weekly meeting in target schools.
• Assist participants in all three Upward Bound grants with completing objectives.
• Recruitment and intake of program participants.
• Provide educational activities: information about courses, FAFSA, tutoring, mentorship, college/career planning.
• Coordinate events like Senior Seminar, Financial Aid Seminar, SAT Prep Day.
• Assist with ASPIRE Summer Discovery Program or other summer courses.
• Aid participants with college and scholarship applications and essays.
• Obtain and maintain student academic records under FERPA.
• Assist with completing the program APR.
• Coordinate/attend student activities, field trips, and college visits.
• Transport participants using college motor pool or rental vehicles.
• Work with Upward Bound Director and instructors to serve participants.
• May perform other duties as assigned by the program director.
