Job description

The primary role of the TRIO Upward Bound Tutor is to provide academic support for Upward Bound students during the afterschool program at Kent County, North Caroline, Colonel Richardson, and/or Easton High Schools and the summer academy on campus at Chesapeake College.

Responsibilities

UB Tutors in particular have a profound effect on program participants because of the time that is spent with students during the program.

  • Assisting students with in-class assignments, projects, SAT/ACT test preparation, papers, research, and other academic tasks.
  • Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.
  • Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills, and approaches to answering test questions.
  • Demonstrating academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
  • Providing students with positive and constructive feedback
  • Offering feedback on progress to students’ parents and Upward Bound staff where appropriate.
  • Building meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Diagnosing student needs through active listening techniques and questioning strategies.
  • Entering of data and contacts in to program database BLUMEN on a consistent basis for programmatic recordkeeping and reporting.
Experience

The successful candidate has the following qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Two semesters of college coursework at a regionally accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Demonstrated ability for rapport and empathy with the concerns, needs, and issues of UB-eligible students and their parents Demonstrated experience with program development.
  • Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to foster positive relationships with Upward Bound staff, students, and high school personnel.
  • Commitment to a collaborative, team-working environment.
  • Computer savvy with experience in MS Office software.
Employment Schedule

The TRIO Upward Bound employment opportunity will last for the duration of the academic year and possibly into the summer. The candidate will be required to work no more than 5 hours per day, Monday – Thursday between the hours of 3:00pm – 8:00pm at either North Caroline, Colonel Richardson, Kent County, or Easton High School. Individual employment schedules will be arranged at the time of hire.
