Job summary

The University of Kansas, in the School of Education & Human Sciences, seeks University Supervisors to mentor PK-12 teacher candidates during student teaching/internship. Supervisors will observe, confer, and guide candidates toward InTASC standards.

Requirements include a master’s degree in Education and at least five years of PK-12 teaching or admin experience, plus availability during the school day. Travel within 50 miles of Lawrence, KS is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Attend University Supervisor Orientation each semester.

  • Perform observations (2 in-person + 1 video for 10-week) or (3 in-person + 1 video for 14-week).
  • Review lesson plans before observations; submit evaluations in STAR protocol.
  • Confer with student teacher and clinical supervisor after observations.
  • Foster positive relations among clinical supervisor, candidate, and principal.

Position Overview

The University of Kansas, Department of Curriculum & Teaching anticipates openings for the position of University Supervisor in the 2026-2027 academic year.

The University Supervisor is a member in the School of Education & Human Sciences (SOEHS). The supervisor serves as the liaison between the SOEHS and the PK-12 schools where teacher candidates are placed for their student teaching/internship. The primary role of the university supervisor is to provide guidance for the teacher candidate in their development of teaching competency and to give assistance to the clinical supervisor.

University supervisors should have academic backgrounds and experience in the field of education and have taught successfully at the levels they supervise. We are seeking university supervisors who have prior teaching experience in the areas of early childhood, elementary, middle/secondary social studies, middle/secondary English, middle/secondary science, middle/secondary math, and world languages. Supervisors must be available to observe and conference with teacher candidates during the school day.

Amount of work required can vary by position and will range in FTE.

Applications will be accepted throughout the year. The successful applicant must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Job Description

100% - University Supervisors are responsible for the following:

  • Attend the online University Supervisor Orientation offered once each semester
  • Attend online monthly meetings with the Program Director of Student Teaching
  • Attend an initial online greeting meeting with the clinical supervisor and teacher candidate
  • For 10 week student teachers - complete two in-person formal observations during school hours and one video observation.
  • For 14 week student teachers - complete three in-person formal observations during school hours and one video observation.
  • Review lesson plans prior to formal observations
  • Submit formative and summative evaluations online including feedback for student teachers on how to improve on the InTASC standards listed on the STAR observation protocol
  • Conduct an in-person or online conference meeting with the student teacher and clinical supervisor for each of the in-person observations. This conference is verbal based on the feedback provided on the STAR protocol.
  • Promote and sustain positive working relationships among the clinical supervisor, teacher candidate, and the school principal

Communicate with the Program Director of Student Teaching about any concerns you have about a student teacher that is at risk of not completing student teaching

Required Qualifications
  • The applicant must hold a master’s degree in Education or other field appropriate to subject area and a minimum of 5 years relevant PK-12 teaching or administrative experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and university faculty
  • Applicants must be available during the regular K-12 school day for supervision
Position Requirements
  • K-12 teaching license or experience as a school principal
  • Ability to travel to multiple school settings within a 50-mile radius of Lawrence, KS
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience observing and evaluating teaching performance
  • Basic technology knowledge with Microsoft Office
