Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking a Freight Car Repairer Trainee to learn inspection, repair, and maintenance of freight cars. The program combines classroom safety and hands-on field training to prepare you for a career in railcar maintenance.

The role is seniority-based and requires working nights, weekends, and holidays with travel for training. Union membership is required within 60 days of seniority. Training includes welding, fabrication, and field shop experience.

Qualifications

• Mechanical aptitude required.
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to understand oral and written communication and give clear instructions.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety and operating rules.
• Perform welding and cutting (SMAW and FCAW) in 2F, 3F, 4F.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• May need to obtain a CDL for Locomotive Service truck operations.
• Fabricate and replace steel parts like grab irons, ladders, and sill steps.
• Replace defective components including wheels, brakes, and draft gears.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Log car information in computer systems (destination, lading, records).
• Wear required PPE and complete safety training and exams.
