Norfolk Southern invites applications for the Freight Car Repairer Trainee role. This hands-on, field-based position trains individuals to inspect, repair, and maintain railcars, supporting safe and efficient operations across the network.

This entry-level, seniority-based union job requires a high school diploma, valid driver’s license, and willingness to travel for training. Lodging is provided; travel is reimbursed per union agreement.

Formación

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 18 years of age or older and valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations.

Responsabilidades

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety and operations rules.
• Perform welding and cutting using SMAW and FCAW in 2F, 3F, and 4F positions.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using specialized equipment; may require CDL.
• Fabricate or replace steel parts such as grab irons, ladders, and sill steps.
• Document repairs and car data in computer systems.
