Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. invites candidates to join a Freight Car Repairer Trainee program in Columbia, SC. This seniority-based union position includes classroom and field training to inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars across our network.

The role requires availability for night and weekend shifts, extensive travel for training, and union membership within 60 days to establish seniority. Lodging and travel are provided per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Outdoor work in all weather and ability to perform heavy physical labor.
• Background screening and post-offer medical examinations including drug tests.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad rules and safety regulations.
• Perform welding and cutting in SMAW/FCAW across 2F, 3F, and 4F positions.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Document repairs and car status in computer systems.
