Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking candidates for a Freight Car Repairer Trainee role in the United States. This hands-on, field-based position combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training to prepare you for a career in freight car maintenance.

You will inspect, repair, and maintain railcars while learning welding and fabrication in a structured program. The role is seniority-based and unionized, requiring shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass background screening and post-offer medical examinations, including drug tests.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars per FRA/AAR standards.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives using rerailing equipment.
• Complete and enter information in computer systems regarding car components and repairs.
• Work safely around heavy, moving equipment and wear protective gear.
