Job summary

Old Republic Commercial Risk's PMA Underwriting Associate Program offers aspiring underwriters a structured path into commercial insurance. Trainees are exposed to underwriting tasks through hands-on assignments, classroom instruction, job shadowing, and team projects.

Participants learn to analyze and price commercial risks, develop consultative selling approaches, and build skills in communication, planning, and decision making within a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with a strong GPA in many majors will be considered.
• Math, Business or Economics preferred.
• Prior exposure to the insurance industry in some capacity (claims/underwriting) a plus.
• Strong critical thinking, judgment and decision making.
• Leadership and relationship-building experience through work or involvement preferred.
• Prior professional work experience preferred (including temporary or part time roles, summer internships).
• Willingness to use sales and negotiation techniques and mathematical expertise in underwriting.
• Ability to work independently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Desire to collaborate across departments including Claims, Risk Control and others.

Responsibilities

• Learn to analyze, select and profitably price coverage for commercial risks and determine terms and conditions of coverage on new and renewal business.
• Work with PMA colleagues to develop a consultative selling approach to generate new business.
• Develop and demonstrate skills in marketing, analysis, decision making, problem solving, planning and organizing.
• Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
• Learn through personalized assignments to gain broader understanding of underwriting commercial insurance.
• Develop and enhance effective interpersonal communication skills with a focus on relationship building.
• Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply compliance policies and procedures.
