Job summary

PMA Companies in Pasadena and Los Angeles, CA, seeks an Underwriting Apprentice to begin a career in underwriting within the Property & Casualty insurance field. You will be trained by PMA’s underwriting professionals through hands-on projects, classroom instruction and shadowing in underwriting, marketing and decision making.

The program emphasizes developing knowledge and skills to advance in underwriting, including collaboration with Claims, Risk Control and other departments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with a strong GPA; Math, Business or Economics preferred.
• Prior exposure to the insurance industry is a plus.
• Strong critical thinking, analysis and judgment.
• Demonstrated relationship building and leadership through activities.
• Experience in a professional environment is preferred (temporary or part‑time or internships).
• Willingness to use sales and negotiation techniques and mathematical expertise in underwriting.
• Ability to work independently.
• Strong technical ability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Desire to work collaboratively with teams across Claims, Risk Control and other departments.

Responsibilities

• Learn to analyze, select and price coverage for commercial risks and set terms and conditions for new and renewal business.
• Develop a consultative selling approach to generate new business aligned with PMA's underwriting strategy.
• Develop skills in marketing, analysis, decision making, problem solving and planning.
• Use logic to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
• Gain broader understanding of underwriting and distribution channels through assignments.
• Build effective interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
• Adhere to PMA's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics and understand applicable policies and laws.

Education
