Job summary

Starr Insurance Companies is seeking an underwriter to analyze and underwrite technical risk exposures on new and renewal business in a Houston-based role. You will maintain an existing renewal book and travel for client and broker meetings on major renewals.

The position emphasizes developing new business accounts, marketing efforts in assigned territories, and ensuring underwriting standards. Strong communication, math, organization, and independence are essential.

Qualifications

  • College degree with 2–3 years of underwriting experience in heavy industrial/technical risks (oil, petrochemical, chemical, steel, power generation).
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Good organization and effective time management.
  • Self motivated and independent work traits.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and underwrite technical risk exposures on new and renewal business.
  • Maintain an existing account renewal book.
  • Travel to and conduct client and broker meetings on all major renewals.
  • Develop new business account production.
  • Travel to and complete marketing/sales meetings in assigned territories.
  • Ensure underwriting and service standards are met on assigned accounts.
  • Develop insurance proposals, prepare policies and endorsements, obtain Home Office underwriting approvals where needed.

Essential Job Functions
  • Analyze and underwrite technical risk exposures on new and renewal business
  • Maintain an existing account renewal book
  • Travel to and conduct client and broker meetings on all major renewals
  • Develop new business account production
  • Travel to and complete marketing/sales meeting in assigned territories
  • Ensure underwriting and service standards are met on assigned accounts
  • Develop insurance proposals, prepare policies and endorsements, obtain Home Office underwriting approvals where needed
  • Purchase reinsurance (only with approval) when needed, review reinsurance certificates and complete reinsurance documentation
  • Arrange account engineering service
Requirements
  • College degree 2-3 years
  • Property underwriting experience involving heavy industrial/technical risks including oil, petrochemical, chemical, steel and power generation
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong math skills
  • Good organization and effective time management
  • Self motivated and independent work traits
