Role Summary

We are seeking a highly analytical and driven Property Underwriter to join our Technical Property team. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing a portfolio of complex property risks, ensuring profitability, and maintaining Starr’s reputation for technical excellence and superior client service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and analyze new and renewal submissions for complex property risks across a range of industry sectors.
  • Assess technical information including construction details, property protection, occupancy characteristics, loss history, and exposure to natural catastrophes.
  • Determine terms, conditions, and pricing for property insurance solutions in accordance with Starr’s underwriting guidelines and appetite.
  • Negotiate coverage terms and conditions with brokers and clients, balancing commercial requirements and risk selection.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with brokers, clients, and internal team members.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identifying trends and recommending underwriting or pricing actions as necessary.
  • Keep up-to-date with developments in the property insurance market and support the team’s continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure all underwritten business is compliant with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in projects and initiatives to improve underwriting processes, systems, and product offerings.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience as a property underwriter, preferably within technical or complex property lines (industrial, manufacturing, energy, large commercial, or similar sectors).
  • Deep technical understanding of property coverage, risk assessment, and pricing methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to interpret complex risk information.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities within deadlines.
  • Proficiency with underwriting and risk management software platforms.
  • Professional qualifications such as ACII, CPCU, or equivalent (desirable).
  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business, engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
