Job summary

Auto-Owners Insurance in Michigan is seeking a motivated underwriting trainee to begin a path in property/casualty underwriting. After an initial in-person training period, you may work from home in alignment with leadership decisions.

The role emphasizes learning coverages, evaluating risks, and applying sound judgment while collaborating with agents and teammates through a formal training program and ongoing product knowledge development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or direct equivalent experience with property/casualty underwriting.
• Strong data organization and multitasking abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to write reports and correspondence.
• Ability to resolve complex issues.

Responsibilities

• Learn coverages and contracts and how underwriting decisions are made.
• Read and interpret documents to support underwriting decisions.
• Assemble information, develop opinions, and express decisions with sound judgment.
• Analyze loss experience, financial conditions, and risk characteristics.
• Acquire working knowledge of underwriting support areas.
• Communicate with independent agents and associates effectively.
• Participate in and complete the underwriting training program.
• Continue product knowledge through approved educational programs.

• Effectively communicate with independent agents and other associates through verbal and/or written means.
• Participate in and successfully complete the Company underwriting training program.
• Continuously develop product knowledge through participation in approved educational programs.
