Sana Benefits, Inc. is seeking an experienced Underwriter to support our small group level-funded products. You will balance profitability with competitive offers, collaborating with Sales, Actuarial, and Product to price accurately and manage risk.

You will analyze risk, help refine underwriting guidelines, and monitor outcomes to inform pricing. This role is fully remote in the US, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and continuous improvement.

We’re looking for an Underwriter to support new business underwriting for our small group level-funded product. This role is critical to balancing profitable growth with competitive, compelling offers to prospects. You’ll be at the intersection of underwriting strategy and sales execution—collaborating closely with our sales, actuarial, and product teams to evaluate risk, price appropriately, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in small group underwriting.

What you will do:

• Evaluate employer group risk and determine appropriate pricing for level-funded plans

• Collaborate with Sales to craft competitive proposals and win business without compromising profitability

• Analyze risk factors and make informed, data-driven decisions—balancing risk tolerance with growth goals

• Help design and refine underwriting guidelines, processes, and tools as we scale

• Partner cross-functionally with Product, Actuarial, and Customer Success to continuously improve the end-to-end experience

• Monitor underwriting outcomes and market dynamics to inform ongoing pricing and risk strategies

About you:

• 3+ years of underwriting experience, ideally with a focus on small groups and/or level-funded products

• Strong understanding of health insurance pricing, risk assessment, and underwriting guidelines

• Comfortable taking calculated risks to support business goals, especially in a fast-evolving startup environment

• Excellent communicator with the ability to explain underwriting decisions to non-technical stakeholders

• Highly collaborative and proactive—able to build strong working relationships across Sales, Actuarial, and beyond

• Thrives in ambiguity and brings a continuous improvement mindset to their work

• Experience working at an insurtech, carrier, or TPA focused on the small group market

• Familiarity with underwriting automation tools or systems

• Strong data analysis skills (Excel, etc.)

$85,000 - $115,000 a year

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $85,000-115,000 base + equity per year for all US-based remote locations.
