Job summary

Penn State University’s Applied Research Laboratory seeks a System Safety Engineer to drive safety across the undersea systems lifecycle. This on-site role collaborates with ARL teams and US Navy counterparts, applying MIL-STD-882E analyses and hazard assessments to deliver safe designs.

The position requires DoD safety process proficiency, strong communication, and the ability to work independently with government counterparts to implement robust safety programs.

Qualifications

  • Experience with MIL-STD-882E safety analyses (PHAs, FHAs, RHAs, SHAs) preferred.
  • Background in system safety for complex DoD programs.
  • Ability to assess documentation for safety compliance across lifecycle stages.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering and design teams to learn ARL system operations.
  • Perform MIL-STD-882E safety analyses and hazard evaluations.
  • Assess documents and artifacts to ensure safety compliance and mitigate hazards.
  • Participate in anomaly investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Coordinate with USN counterparts and government safety boards on safety requirements.
  • Develop and deliver System Safety Program Plans and related safety deliverables.
