Position Summary
McLain Site Solutions is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Pipe Layer to join our underground utility team. Working under the direction of the Pipe Crew Foreman, the Pipe Layer is responsible for the safe and accurate installation of underground utility systems. This position works directly in the trench, ensuring that all pipes are installed to the proper line, grade, and elevation while meeting project specifications and quality standards. The Pipe Layer works closely with the Tailman, Hillman, and equipment operators to ensure efficient and productive operations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Install underground utility systems.
- Read and interpret utility plans, profiles, cut sheets, and construction drawings.
- Maintain proper line, grade, and elevation using pipe lasers, grade rods, and grade information.
- Lay PVC, HDPE, ductile iron pipe (DIP), reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), and related underground utility materials.
- Assemble pipe joints, install gaskets, fittings, valves, fire hydrants, manholes, catch basins, inlets, and utility structures.
- Verify trench depth, bedding, pipe alignment, backfill, and compaction meet project specifications.
- Work closely with the Tailman to ensure pipe joints are clean, properly prepared, and installed correctly.
- Direct equipment operators during pipe installation to ensure safe and accurate placement.
- Assist with pressure testing, gravity sewer testing, and utility inspections.
- Inspect materials before installation and report damaged or defective materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company policies, OSHA regulations, and excavation safety procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of underground utility installation experience.
- Experience installing water, sewer, force main, and storm drainage systems.
- Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods and practices.
- Ability to read blueprints, utility profiles, and cut sheets.
- Experience using pipe lasers and maintaining line and grade.
- Experience installing PVC, HDPE, ductile iron pipe (DIP), and reinforced concrete pipe (RCP).
- Strong understanding of trench safety, bedding, backfill, and compaction requirements.
- Ability to safely work inside trenches and around heavy equipment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a pipe crew.
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to quality workmanship.
Preferred
- Experience installing StormTech® underground detention systems.
- Competent Person – Trenching & Excavation Certification.
- OSHA 10 Certification.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- CDLExperience operating excavators or loaders.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work inside trenches and excavations.
- Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Frequently perform repetitive lifting, digging, carrying, and manual labor.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and underground utility installation equipment.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily on active construction sites. Employees regularly work inside excavations around underground utilities, heavy equipment, moving machinery, dust, noise, vibration, and varying weather conditions. Required PPE must be worn at all times.
Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- Typical hours: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- One-hour unpaid lunch
- Overtime may be available based on project needs and business needs.
