Job description

Department Overview

The function of the Ultrasound sonographer position within the Department of Diagnostic Imaging is to perform all phases of diagnostic medical sonography. These procedures include, but are not necessarily limited to, abdominal, OB/GYN, breast, neurologic, small parts, native and transplant renal and liver Doppler, and pediatric ultrasound procedures. The ultrasonographer promotes OHSU’s mission by delivering high-quality, cost-effective, family-oriented service. This position fosters a collaborative environment by integrating education, research, and clinical leadership. Sonographers work with infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients across locations including Marquam Hill, South Waterfront, and Beaverton (Westside).

Function/Duties of Position

Imaging:

  1. Provides quality real-time 2D, 3D, M-mode, and Doppler applications to acquire images with accuracy and efficiency, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
  2. Documents and demonstrates knowledge and skill in evaluating normal/abnormal anatomy and related pathologies for presentation to radiologists.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in ultrasound physics.
  4. Exercises responsible judgment in recognizing and reporting significant situations related to patient care.
  5. Performs portable procedures when needed.
  6. Prepares and instructs patients for diagnostic studies using age-appropriate communication skills.
  7. Optimizes each image during examinations to obtain the highest quality study with minimal discomfort to the patient.
  8. Must be able to perform all ranges of exams after completing technical competencies.
  9. Assists physicians in invasive and/or specialized procedures, such as amniocentesis, needle biopsies, localizations, and tumor mass assessments, as directed.
  10. Stays current with new ultrasound technology hardware and software upgrades.
  11. Documentation:

  • Verifies complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service.
  • Verifies and initials orders in patient charts, and correctly identifies patients following department policies.
  • Labels images with patient demographics, position, and other required documentation.
  • Completes scanning duties efficiently, ensuring correct data entry, billing, and image storage in PACS.
  • Keeps equipment and work areas neat and clean.
  • Maintains adequate par levels of supplies.
  • Performs quality control on diagnostic equipment and maintains a weekly logbook.

Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved diagnostic medical sonography course qualifying for ARDMS board examinations upon hire.
  • ARDMS registration in OB/GYN and Abdomen within 12 months of hire. Must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging and hold a current CPR card.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good judgment, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using various ultrasound units.
  • Ability to demonstrate normal anatomy and abnormal pathology.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound physics and principles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in a large hospital setting is a plus.
  • Vascular experience is a plus.
  • RVT encouraged.
Additional Details

This position is flexible, with no guaranteed schedule or hours. It is not eligible for benefits. The environment is busy, with frequent interruptions, multiple demands, and continuous interactions with patients and medical professionals. Exposure to chemical solutions and human tissue/fluids is required.
