Job summary

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) invites a UI/UX intern to work on internal web applications in Madison for 15–20 hours per week over a ~12-week term. Collaborate with software engineers and business partners to design data-rich interfaces and improve dashboards.

You will contribute to clear, intuitive experiences, leveraging Figma, design systems, and AI-assisted tools to streamline design-to-code workflows within a collaborative, technically engaged team.

Qualifications

• Active student in product/UX design or related field.
• Experience with wireframing, mockups, and prototyping workflows.

Job Description

We are seeking a fall intern who can work onsite in Madison, Wisconsin, for 15–20 hours per week. This internship is expected to last approximately 12 weeks, with the potential to continue beyond the initial term.

About the opportunity

Join our Software Engineering team at SWIB as a UI/UX Intern and help create internal web applications that support investment research and operational workflows. Our products help colleagues work with complex information, make informed decisions, and complete important business processes.

You will contribute to the design of clear, intuitive, and visually thoughtful experiences for data-rich applications. You will also help us explore a practical design-to-code workflow: using Figma, design systems, and AI-assisted development tools to create a more consistent path from product design to maintainable software.

This is an opportunity to work closely with engineers and business partners on real products while developing your product-design practice in a collaborative, technically engaged environment.

Essential activities

• Design user flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes for internal web applications.
• Turn complex workflows and dense information into clear, effective user experiences.
• Participate in user research, incorporate feedback, and iterate on designs with business partners and engineers.
• Help evolve reusable Figma components and evaluate how Figma, design systems, and AI-assisted tools can improve the path from design to software.

What we are looking for

• Current student in product design, UX design, interaction design, human-computer interaction, visual communication, or a related field.
• Familiarity with Figma or a comparable tool for wireframing, mockups, and prototyping.
• Understanding of user-centered design practices, including research, workflow mapping, prototyping, and iterative refinement.
• Ability to create designs that are intuitive, functional, accessible, and appropriately polished for the work users need to do.
• Interest in designing for complex, data-rich workflows; experience with dashboards, analytical tools, or enterprise applications is a plus.
• Curiosity about design systems and how design choices translate into working software; exposure to tools such as Material UI, Vue, React, or AI-assisted development is a plus.
