Job summary

NewView Oklahoma Center for Low Vision and Blindness in OKC is seeking a Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) / Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS). The role delivers individualized instruction to youth and adults with visual impairments to foster independence, safety, and confidence in educational and community settings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in Orientation & Mobility or Special Education with emphasis in visual impairment
• Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS - ACVREP) and Certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI - OK DOE licensure)
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between service sites
• Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of functional vision and mobility needs
• Provide instruction in Orientation and Mobility, indoor and outdoor travel, and compensatory/communication skills (Braille, large print, tactile symbols, assistive technology)
• Design and implement individualized lesson plans with measurable goals
• Evaluate progress and document data regularly
• Collaborate with vision professionals, educators, and families
• Participate in IEPs and adult rehabilitation conferences
• Ensure accessibility and inclusion with general education staff
• Maintain accurate and confidential records
• Track service hours, mileage, and client outcomes
• Educate clients and families on blindness skills and community resources
• Promote self-advocacy, independence, and confidence
• Stay current on best practices and participate in ongoing training
