City Colleges of Chicago’s Malcolm X College is seeking a part-time Speech Tutor to support the Academic Support Department. The role involves tutoring students in writing, reading, and speech-related subjects, both in labs and embedded classroom settings.

The tutor will create targeted tutoring plans, promote independent study skills, and help students manage time and study strategies to achieve academic success. Collaboration with instructors and advisors is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to tutoring.
• Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
• Experience teaching or tutoring at the postsecondary level is strongly preferred.
• Experience in a large urban community college environment is highly desirable.
• Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency.

Malcolm X College is seeking a Speech Tutor – Part Time for theAcademic Support Department.

A Tutor provides students with tutoring and instructional supportin an academic or occupational area of study to help improve theiracademic capabilities and progress academically, while promotingindependent learning and self-reliance. Tutors assist tutees indeveloping and improving their competency in course work; and helpstudents integrate and apply effective study skills, active readingand note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management andorganizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work withstudents in various programs across the colleges, providingindividual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing,English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside theclassroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in math and writinglabs; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled indistance learning courses. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Provides academic assistance and tutoring to students on anindividual or group basis on a wide range of subjects in anacademic or occupational area.
• Tutors students to help them gain a deeper comprehension ofcourse materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.
• Crafts effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses andstrengths; motivates students and provides them with confidence tofeel successful.
• Provides students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effectiveuse of time, and how to build better study habits.
• Schedules individual tutoring sessions at a college’s Tutoring/Learning Resource/ Academic Support Center, based on studentsrequests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course ordiscipline.
• Assists the tutee in problem solving and applying criticalthinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline orsubject area.
• Helps students develop positive attitudes and a high level ofmotivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence andreduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
• Tutors students and provide students with strategies to developeffective study habits and skills to improve academiccapabilities.
• Prepares students for standardized testing and providesstrategies to overcome test anxiety.
• Participates in tutor orientation and attends professionaldevelopment and training sessions to increase competency in subjectareas and improve tutoring skills.
• May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academicskills.
• Provide ongoing communication with students, Instructors andacademic advisors regrading academic progress of individualstudents
• Maintains records on tutoring activities. Provides periodicstudent assessments and evaluations as required.

Embedded Tutor

• Supports the classroom Instructor as an embedded tutor,pro-actively engaging students in learning exercises, monitoringstudents’ level of comprehension, and assisting students in theclassroom struggling with materials and course content.
• Meets with Instructor to discuss implementation and use of lessonplans, review feedback on learning activities, and to assessstudents’ progress and challenges in the classroom.
• Conducts in-class presentations on various strategies to improveacademic capabilities including study and note taking skills,reading comprehension skills, and writing skills.

Reading and Writing Lab / Math Lab

• Coaches students through the writing process as it relates tovarious academic disciplines, helping students become betteracademic writers, develop critical thinking skills, and understandacademic research and documentation of sources across thecurriculum.

Tutor – Part Time

• Works with students to help them become adept with writingtechniques used to plan, draft, revise, and edit writtendocuments.
• Tutors students enrolled in an integrated reading/writing courseat the developmental/ foundational level, to increase theiracademic proficiency to college level.
• Leads activities and works with students in developmental and ESLreading courses, such as practicing clear thoughts at the sentenceand paragraph level, and longer-form writing.
• Assesses assigned student’s level of writing skills and attitudetowards writing and sets goals for tutoring sessions at the writingcenter.
• Tutors students to improve their math competency and buildconfidence, applying learning strategies to work with students withdifferent learning styles and abilities in math.
• Provides tutoring for various levels of math includingdevelopmental, transitional, high school mathematics (pre-algebra,geometry), college algebra and statistics.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college oruniversity in higher in a field of study and subject area relatedto the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technicalcertifications and training. Specific additional requirements orcertifications may be
• required depending on the assignment area.
• Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
• Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic supportto students at the postsecondary instructional level is stronglypreferred.
• Experience working in a large, urban community collegeenvironment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body ishighly desirable.
• Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Proficiency in the subject area to be tutored.
• Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies insubject area(s)
• Knowledge of tutoring strategies used for improving studentsstudy skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communicationskills
