Job summary

Malcolm X College is seeking a part-time English Tutor to bridge gaps between the college and student needs, helping students make academic progress and promoting independent learning.

The role involves tutoring in writing, reading and English, both in-class and online, and may include embedded tutoring and lab support to foster academic success. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is expected with strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing, English or related field.
• Excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with a diverse student body.
• Must be self-directed and able to complete assignments in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

• Provides academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually.
• Establishes liaison with the instructor and works under the instructor’s direction to assist the student.
• Attends periodic training sessions given by staff members to increase competency in working with students.
• Maintains records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
• Schedules tutoring appointments.
• Provides evaluations and other reports as required by staff.
• Helps students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying and helps students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
• Assists students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
• Helps students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
• Establishes and maintains rapport with the assigned students.
• Assists in designing and implementing class cooperative projects.

Malcolm X College

Malcolm X College is seeking a part time English Tutor. The parttime Tutor bridges the gap between the college and the needs of thestudent. This position also helps students make academic progress,while promoting independent learning and self-reliance.

A Tutor provides students with tutoring and instructional supportin an academic or occupational area of study to help improve theiracademic capabilities and progress academically, while promotingindependent learning and self-reliance. Tutors assist tutees indeveloping and improving their competency in course work; and helpstudents integrate and apply effective study skills, active readingand note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management andorganizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work withstudents in various programs across the colleges, providingindividual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing,English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside theclassroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in math and writinglabs; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled indistance learning courses. Performs related duties asrequired.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in the CreativeWriting, English or Related Field. Consideration will be given tocandidates who do not have a Bachelors degree but possess technicalcertification(s) necessary for the subject being tutored.
• Possess excellent communication skills, and the ability to workwith a diverse student body.
• Must be self-directed and able to complete assignments in atimely manner.

Additional Information

• Salary Range: Salary Range: $20.69-$23.87 per hour
