Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago’s Malcolm X College is seeking a part-time Speech Tutor to support the Academic Support Department. The role involves tutoring students in writing, reading, and speech-related subjects, both in labs and embedded classroom settings.

The tutor will create targeted tutoring plans, promote independent study skills, and help students manage time and study strategies to achieve academic success. Collaboration with instructors and advisors is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to tutoring.
  • Completion of tutoring certification preferred.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring at the postsecondary level is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a large urban community college environment is highly desirable.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring and instructional support to students in various subjects.
  • Develop and implement tutoring plans addressing tutees’ weaknesses and strengths.
  • Schedule and conduct individual and small-group tutoring sessions.
  • Assist tutees in problem solving and applying critical thinking in coursework.
  • Help students develop effective study skills, note-taking, and time management.
  • Embed tutoring in classroom settings and support distance learning as needed.
  • Maintain records of tutoring activities and assess student progress.
