Job summary

Bexar County Public Works seeks a Mechanic I to repair and overhaul gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, brakes, and transmissions on light to heavy trucks and road equipment. The role includes welding, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and road tests.

Under direct supervision, you’ll operate testing equipment, document repairs, and assist with fabrication. Requires high school diploma/GED and 2 years in automotive or road equipment work; CDL may be required within 6 months.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED; 2 years automotive/road construction equipment experience.
• Knowledge of hand and power tools and lubricants.
• Ability to drive road equipment and diagnose malfunctions; capable of road testing vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Repair or overhaul gasoline/diesel engines and hydraulic, fuel, cooling, and suspension systems on light/heavy trucks and road equipment.
• Remove/repair transmissions and clutch systems.
• Perform brake repairs and wheel bearing replacement.
• Conduct preventive maintenance on medium/heavy trucks and road equipment.
• Operate testing equipment and troubleshoot electrical/mechanical systems.
• Work on disabled equipment on roadways and perform road tests.
• Assist with welding and fabrication of equipment components.
• Maintain records of repairs and services performed.
• Other related duties as required.
