Overview
Responsible for the repair, overhaul, inspection, and routine/preventative maintenance of diesel or gas-powered trucks, heavy equipment, and light automotive vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic and specialized mechanical duties on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and related power-driven equipment.
- Inspect, adjust, and replace components such as valves, hoses, belts, alternators, and other necessary parts.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, addressing any USDOT violations and documenting findings.
- Overhaul and repair engines and remove major units like engines, transmissions, and differentials.
- Disassemble and inspect parts for wear; repair or replace worn components (e.g., pistons, rods, gears, valves, bearings).
- Overhaul or replace major systems including carburetors, blowers, generators, starters, pumps, and ignition systems.
- Perform rewiring of ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels as needed.
- Align and adjust brakes, front ends, shock absorbers, and other suspension components.
- Mend damaged body parts, including fenders and bodywork, and replace or adjust headlights.
- Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Provide technical guidance and training to junior technicians on best practices and techniques.
- Maintain accurate service records and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
- Raise vehicles using hydraulic jacks or hoists for access to mechanical units.
- Perform additional duties as needed related to vehicle maintenance and repair.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, with coursework in skilled trades or crafts.
- Strong background and certification as a truck and automotive mechanic.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in diesel engine repairs.
- Valid Virginia State Inspector certification preferred.
- Class B vehicle license preferred.
- Technical training and manufacturer certifications a plus.
- Advanced diagnostics (Cummins Insight, J-Pro, Tech Tool software).
- State Inspection certification.
- ASE accreditation pertaining to Medium/Heavy Duty Vehicles.
- Work experience in a dealer setting for 1-2 years.
- Previous employment with an International Dealer or Volvo Service center is a plus.
- Welding experience and some bodywork and fiberglass repair skills are preferred.
