Job summary

Elgin Community College is hiring a part-time CDL trainer to support hands-on driving instruction for students in tractor-trailer operations. You will work with students on pre-trip inspections, vehicle control, and on-road driving, primarily in behind-the-wheel training with manual transmissions.

The role requires a valid Class A CDL, 3+ years of experience, and a commitment to safety. Flexible day/evening shifts are available; DOT physical and drug screen are required.

Qualifications

• Valid Class A CDL and tractor-trailer driving experience.
• Three years of tractor-trailer driving experience including manual transmissions.
• No moving violations within the past three years.
• Safe driving habits are required.
• Basic tech skills in email and electronic communication.
• Applicants must successfully complete a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screen.
• Flexibility to work variable schedules throughout the year, with most work during behind-the-wheel training phases.

Responsibilities

• Assist students with hands-on CDL training activities, including pre-trip inspections and on-road driving.
• Reinforce safe commercial driving practices with guidance and feedback.
• Promote and maintain a safe training environment by following safety procedures and reporting unsafe conditions.
• Maintain accurate student training records using program electronic systems per FMCSA and IL SOS requirements.
• Communicate effectively with program staff regarding student progress, attendance, safety concerns, and other related matters.
• Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in all interactions with students and staff.
• Assist with inspection, cleanliness, and safe operation of program vehicles and equipment.

Job Summary:

This position assists with CDL training by working with students on pre-trip inspections, vehicle control skills, and on-road driving in tractor-trailer commercial vehicles with manual transmissions. Trainers support program operations, reinforce safe driving practices, and help students develop into safe and successful commercial drivers.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Valid Class A CDL
• Three (3) years of tractor-trailer driving experience, including manual transmissions
• No moving violations within the past three (3) years
• Safe driving habits are required
• Basic skills in the use of technology, including email and electronic communication
• Applicants must successfully complete a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screen
• Flexibility to work variable schedules throughout the year, with most work taking place during behind-the-wheel training phases. Work outside these phases is based on the needs of the department and may not be available.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Five (5) years of tractor-trailer driving experience with manual transmissions
• Experience with student CDL instruction
• Valid Class A CDL without automatic transmission (E) restriction
• HazMat, Doubles, Tanker, and/or any other endorsements
• Experience using technology for communication, training, and/or electronic recordkeeping
• Flexibility to work across day and/or night shifts based on the needs of the program is ideal, but not required

Essential Duties:

• Assist students with hands-on CDL training activities, including pre-trip inspections, vehicle control skills, on-road driving, manual transmission operation, and other program training activities as assigned.
• Reinforce safe commercial driving practices and provide students with guidance, coaching, and feedback throughout training activities.
• Promote and maintain a safe training environment by following established safety procedures, monitoring student activities, and addressing or reporting unsafe conditions and practices.
• Maintain accurate and timely student training records using program-designated electronic recordkeeping systems in accordance with FMCSA and Illinois Secretary of State requirements.
• Communicate effectively with program staff regarding student progress, attendance, safety concerns, and other related matters.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and effective communication in all interactions with students, colleagues, and members of the public.
• Assist with the inspection, cleanliness, and safe operation of program vehicles and equipment and promptly report maintenance or safety concerns
