Traveling Project Engineer/APM - Construction
Position Overview
We are seeking a traveling Project Engineer/Assistant Project Manager (APM) for construction projects across multiple regions. This role provides handson field engineering and project support to ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, and within budget. The ideal candidate travels frequently to job sites to coordinate subcontractors, manage RFIs and submittals, monitor quality and safety, support scheduling and cost control, and act as the onsite extension of the project management team.
Key Responsibilities
- Travel to and manage multiple construction sites to provide onsite engineering and project support
- Prepare, review, and process RFIs, submittals, change orders, and project documentation
- Coordinate daily with superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, and client representatives to resolve issues and maintain project momentum
- Assist the Project Manager with schedule updates, progress tracking, and production reporting
- Perform site inspections to ensure quality control, compliance with specifications, and adherence to safety requirements
- Support cost tracking and budget control by documenting labor, materials, equipment usage, and change order impacts
- Update and maintain project documentation, drawings, and correspondence in the project management system
- Conduct constructability reviews and provide technical guidance to field crews
- Facilitate startup, testing, and commissioning activities as required
- Communicate progress, risks, and mitigation plans to the project team and stakeholders on a regular basis
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil, Construction, Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of construction Project Engineer experience with demonstrated field time; prior travel for work required
- Proven experience with RFIs, submittals, and construction documentation workflows
- Familiarity with scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera P6 or similar) and experience updating and maintaining project schedules
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, quality standards, and safety regulations (OSHA)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and interact with clients
- Proficient with construction management software (Procore, Viewpoint, or similar), Bluebeam/AutoCAD a plus
- Ability to work independently in a fastpaced, field environment and to prioritize multiple assignments simultaneously
- Nice to have: prior Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager experience, formal training or demonstrated experience managing RFIs and scheduling, PMP or CCM certification, commissioning experience, LEED or other industry certifications
