A Top 20 ENR General Contractor is seeking an experienced Traveling Project Engineer to support the delivery of large-scale, mission-critical data center projects throughout the United States. This position provides technical, coordination, and project-controls support for the Civil, Structural, and Architectural (CSA) scope of complex hyperscale and mission-critical facilities, working alongside the Project Manager and Superintendent to drive execution from mobilization through closeout.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, highly organized construction professional with experience supporting large, technically complex projects in fast-paced environments. The Project Engineer is responsible for managing project documentation, driving the flow of RFIs and submittals, supporting subcontractor and vendor coordination, tracking schedule and cost, and reinforcing safety and quality standards in support of field execution.
This role requires a proactive, deadline-driven professional capable of managing competing priorities and multiple information streams while collaborating with project executives, owners, design teams, trade partners, and client stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Provide project engineering and technical support for CSA construction activities on mission-critical data center projects.
- Manage and maintain project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, change documentation, and field directives, ensuring accuracy and timely processing.
- Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, and submittals to proactively identify conflicts and coordinate resolutions with the design team and trade partners.
- Support coordination among subcontractors, vendors, consultants, inspectors, and client representatives.
- Assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in developing and maintaining short-term execution plans, manpower forecasts, and look-ahead schedules.
- Track project costs, procurement, and material deliveries to support schedule and budget objectives.
- Document daily site operations, field observations, progress, and quality inspections.
- Help ensure subcontractors meet project milestones, productivity expectations, and contractual requirements.
- Partner with the project leadership team to identify risks, develop solutions, and maintain overall project objectives.
- Maintain accurate project records including daily reports, progress tracking, inspection records, and as-built documentation.
- Support commissioning, turnover, and closeout by compiling documentation and ensuring CSA scopes are complete, documented, and aligned with client requirements.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, quality, and continuous improvement across the project team.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of commercial construction experience, ideally in a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or Project Coordinator role.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred (or equivalent field experience).
- Experience supporting large-scale data center, mission-critical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, advanced manufacturing, or similarly complex projects.
- Exposure to CSA construction scopes on large commercial or industrial projects; experience on projects valued at $100M+ a plus.
- Experience working for a major general contractor or construction management firm preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple document streams and deadlines in a high-performance environment.
- Ability to interpret and analyze contract documents, drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards, site safety practices, and quality assurance/quality control processes.
- Proficiency with construction management platforms such as Procore, Autodesk Build, Bluebeam, or similar systems.
- Strong communication, coordination, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel extensively and support project assignments across multiple regions.
Preferred Experience
- Previous support experience on hyperscale data center campuses for major technology clients.
- Industrial tilt wall construction experience will be considered in lieu of direct data center or mission-critical project experience.
- Experience supporting fast-track construction schedules and complex stakeholder environments.
- Experience coordinating with mission-critical MEP teams while supporting CSA execution.
- Knowledge of data center construction standards, commissioning requirements, and turnover processes.
- Experience working in a collaborative project environment with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners.
