**** THIS IS A TRAVEL ROLE IN LAFAYETTE, IN. $25/HR PLUS $150 PER DIEM*****

Job Description

The Traveling Mechanical Assembler assembles large custom diesel and natural gas engines that power critical equipment such as hospital backup generators, data centers, and large industrial vehicles. You will work with massive engine components, follow detailed blueprints and work instructions, and use a wide range of mechanical and electrical tools to build, troubleshoot, and repair in-process engines. This is a highly hands-on, mechanically intensive role suited for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoy complex, non-repetitive assembly work and can confidently work from technical documentation and computer-based instructions.

Responsibilities
  • Assemble large diesel and natural gas engines using a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, torque tools, and specialized equipment.
  • Manipulate and position massive engine components safely with lifting devices and cranes during the assembly process.
  • Interpret and follow engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and written work instructions for hundreds of different sub-assemblies and custom specifications.
  • Use torque wrenches, pneumatic air tools, DC (electrical) tooling, and other fastening equipment to ensure all fasteners are correctly installed and torqued to specification.
  • Review and follow computer-based work instructions, SOPs, and processes, documenting progress and completion accurately on a CPU.
  • Learn and apply the technical aspects of engine assembly, including troubleshooting and repair of in-process engines.
  • Verify that assemblies meet quality and safety standards, focusing on proper fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment usage, and torque application.
  • Work as part of a small assembly team, typically in pairs, coordinating tasks and assisting teammates as needed across multiple zones on the main line.
  • Assemble a variety of engine sub-systems, such as oil pumps and coolers, within defined timeframes that vary by area and job type.
  • Use cranes/hoists and lifting devices safely to move heavy components, following all safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including maintaining a clean and organized work area and complying with facility rules and guidelines.
  • Participate in training and assessments that cover safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment, torque equipment, and quality processes.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues that arise during assembly, using mechanical aptitude and previous experience to identify and resolve problems.
  • Adapt to different shifts and work schedules as part of a traveling, flexible workforce, including overtime and weekend work as needed.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members about progress, issues, and quality concerns, and follow proper call-off procedures when necessary.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience working in an industrial environment with hands-on mechanical tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience using mechanical tooling such as torque equipment, DC tools, hand tools, and pneumatic tools.
  • Proven mid-level or higher mechanical aptitude; this role requires more than basic assembly or simple power tool experience.
  • Experience following written work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), blueprints, and other technical documentation.
  • Ability to use a computer (CPU) to follow engineering drawings, work instructions, and processes, and to document work completed.
  • Ability to pass written and hands-on assessments during the training period related to safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment, torque equipment, and quality.
  • Comfort working with large mechanical systems such as engines, industrial equipment, or comparable machinery.
  • Mechanical experience from industries such as automotive, diesel technician, lube technician, tire shop, farming, construction, maintenance, or facilities.
  • Ability to interpret measurements (e.g., using tape measures) and basic mechanical drawings.
  • Strong focus on quality standards and processes to ensure high-quality parts and assemblies.
  • Willingness and ability to wear required PPE at all times, including steel or composite toe shoes, earplugs, and safety glasses.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in automotive repair, diesel engine work, or mechanical assembly of large or complex equipment.
  • Background in light industrial, production, or general labor roles involving mechanical or electrical assembly.
  • Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with industrial wiring, electrical tooling, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience operating cranes, hoists, or other lifting devices in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Prior exposure to quality systems, including defined quality standards, inspection steps, and documentation requirements.
  • Experience working in team-based assembly environments with shared tasks and responsibilities.
  • Comfort working in a structured manufacturing setting with established safety, quality, and production expectations.
