Job summary

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a 24-bed Stepdown/MedSurg unit at a Level 1 Trauma Center with telemetry monitoring and required EKG interpretation.

The role involves night shifts (7p–7:30a), rotating weekends and holidays, floating with other unit staff, and providing care to trauma, brain/spinal injuries, and complex surgical patients. A WV license (or compact) and BLS/ACLS are required; EPIC EMR is used daily.

Job description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Stepdown/MedSurg unit at a Level 1 Trauma Center requiring telemetry and EKG interpretation skills.

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license required, willing to wait for license if needed
• Current BLS and ACLS certification required
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• BSN not required
• Strong assessment skills and adaptability to a fast-paced environment required
• Basic EKG interpretation skills required
• Unexpired driver's license copy required for consideration

Responsibilities

• Work on the 8NE Stepdown/MedSurg unit, a 24-bed level 1 trauma center unit
• Patient population includes trauma, brain and spinal cord injuries, traumatic fractures, complex trauma, respiratory compromised patients, reconstructive plastic surgery, advanced diabetic management, and general surgical patients
• Nurse to patient ratio of 1:3 with support from clinical associates (typically 3 aides for 24 patients)
• All 24 beds are telemetry monitored with central monitor techs reading strips; RNs need basic EKG interpretation skills
• Uses EPIC EMR
• RNs required to titrate drips such as cardizem, labetalol, and amiodarone (no sedative drips)
• Works with RT equipment including BiPap, CPAP, and chronic/non-weaning vents
• 12-hour night shifts, 7p-7:30a, including weeknights and weekends
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend depending on staffing
• Holiday coverage required on a rotational basis
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating required on a rotational basis with other unit staff, including travelers
• Provide care for a complex med/surg and trauma population within a Level 1 Trauma Center
• Unit has an in-house charge nurse, with house supervisors and night shift supervisors available 24/7
• Unit-specific orientation provided and reviewed with a clinical preceptor
• 11 rooms equipped with in-ceiling lifts to support early patient mobilization
• Video monitoring used for additional patient safety
• Royal blue scrubs required
• Must reside outside a 50-mile radius from the facility to be eligible as a traveler
• Previous permanent staff must have a 2-year break before returning as a traveler
• Previous travelers at this facility must have a 2-year break before returning
• Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one year without taking a 2-year break
• First-time travelers and new graduate nurses are welcome to apply
