Qualifications

  • Active DC RN license or proof of pending DC license with date and number.
  • BLS certification; NRP and PALS certifications preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years NICU experience; 1.5+ years Level IV NICU strongly preferred.
  • Recent tracheostomy care and ventilator management experience required (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP).
  • NICU IV therapy including arterial line management and IV vasopressor administration.
  • Cerner charting experience preferred; no background/licensing issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive NICU nursing care for neonates across gestational ages.
  • Coordinate care in a Level IV NICU with cross-unit rotation (PICU/CICU).
  • Manage phototherapy, glucose monitoring, feeding, NG/NJ tube care.
  • Maintain infection control protocols and sepsis workups.
  • Support breastfeeding and safe handling of breast milk.

Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced NICU RN with a Level IV NICU background for a teaching hospital's Level 1 trauma center, requiring active DC licensure and rotating shift flexibility.

Details
  • Level IV NICU within a children's hospital designated for the highest level of care for premature and critically ill newborns
  • 70 beds dedicated to Neonatal ICU within a 323-bed inpatient facility
  • Patient ratios vary by acuity, ranging from 1:1 to 1:4, with 1:2 being most common
  • Day (3x12, 7:00-19:30) and Night (3x12, 19:00-7:30) shifts with rotation required every 3-4 weeks
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to other critical care units including PICU and CICU, with no age cutoff on patients
  • Uses Cerner EMR
  • Coordinates care for complex conditions including congenital heart defects, ECMO, respiratory distress/failure, pulmonary hypertension, genetic/metabolic disorders, and sepsis
Requirements
  • Active DC RN license required, or proof of pending application with submission date and application number
  • MD or VA compact/state license may also apply depending on residency
  • BLS certification required; NRP and PALS certifications preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of NICU experience required, with at least 1.5+ years of Level IV NICU experience strongly preferred
  • Recent tracheostomy care and ventilator management experience required (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
  • NICU IV therapy experience required, including arterial line management, blood/blood product administration, and IV vasopressor administration
  • Experience with neonates across all gestational ages, including under 24-28 weeks
  • Cerner charting experience preferred
  • No background check or license hits permitted, without exception
Additional Information
  • Provide comprehensive NICU nursing care including phototherapy, blood glucose monitoring, feeding management (bottle, breast, gavage), and NG/NJ tube placement and care
  • Manage infectious disease precautions including isolation protocols, PPE, and sepsis workups
  • Support breastfeeding and proper handling of breast milk
  • Perform colostomy/ileostomy management and care as needed
  • Scrubs may be any color but must be logo-free and child-friendly
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this position
  • Local candidates accepted with no mileage restriction at the same bill rate
  • Maximum RTO of 7 days; missed shifts must be made up within the same week
  • Returning travelers must have been separated from the facility for at least 1 year
  • Pre-start training modules must be completed prior to orientation
  • A photo must be provided upon contract signature if offered and accepted
