Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department position requiring ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications. The assignment is in Illinois and favors travel RNs with a strong ED background. A valid IL RN license or licensure in progress is required.

The role includes a busy ED with a Peds ER component, 12-hour evening shifts, and a schedule of 36 guaranteed hours per week plus orientation. EPIC EMR is used for patient care documentation.

Qualifications

  • Active IL RN license or licensure in progress.
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC.
  • ENPC and NRP are a bonus but not required.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
  • At least 1 prior travel assignment preferred.
  • SANE RN experience preferred.
  • Teaching hospital experience with residents preferred.
  • Proficiency with vasopressor and cardiac drip titration.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to life-threatening cardiac rhythms.
  • Must pass a negative drug screen per facilities policy.

Responsibilities

  • Care for Level 1 Trauma, STEMI-receiving, and Stroke Center ED patients.
  • Provide care in a busy ED with a Peds ER component.
  • Treat newborns to elderly with critical illnesses and trauma.
  • Travelers may care for stabilized trauma after transfer.
  • Support ED team, monitor rhythms, and perform EKGs and ABGs.
  • Utilize EPIC EMR for documentation and orders.
  • Shift: evenings, 1p-1a, 12-hour shifts; 36 hours weekly plus orientation.
  • No self-scheduling; submit time-off requests via scheduling manager.

Responsibilities

  • Level 1 Trauma, STEMI-receiving, and Stroke Center Emergency Department in an acute care hospital setting
  • Includes a Peds ER with 23 beds and no separate trauma bays
  • Cares for a wide range of patients from newborns to elderly, including critically ill, trauma, stroke, and cardiac patients
  • Level 1/2 trauma patients are managed by a specialized trauma team; travelers may care for stabilized trauma patients once transferred to a pod
  • Average daily ED volume of approximately 233 patients (189 adults, 44 pediatric)
  • Nurse to patient ratio of 1:4, or 1:5 in low-acuity vertical care areas
  • Utilizes EPIC EMR system
  • Evening shift schedule, 1p-1a, 12-hour shifts
  • 36 guaranteed hours per week with 12 non-billable orientation hours
  • Scheduling is managed by the scheduling manager; travelers do not self-schedule but may submit time-off requests
  • ED techs support nursing staff at a 9:1 ratio, assisting with EKGs and vitals
  • Respiratory therapists assist with ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow equipment, though RNs perform breathing treatments and ABGs
  • Tele monitor techs are present, but nurses must be able to interpret and act on cardiac rhythms using Phillips monitors
  • Radiology or transport staff handle patient transport to X-ray or CT
  • Nurses and techs typically draw labs, with phlebotomy assisting for boarder patients
  • Work alongside ED attendings, residents, charge nurses, and house supervisors on each shift
  • Two charge nurses and two house supervisors are present per shift; charge nurses typically do not carry a full patient assignment
  • Provide direct patient care including breathing treatments, ABGs, and EKGs with a goal turnaround of 10 minutes
  • Local rate applies for clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
  • No radius rule restricts eligibility for this position
  • COVID vaccination is not required for consideration
  • Cancellation policy allows up to 12 hours per 13-week assignment without penalty
