Job summary

Friends of the Children in Chicago seeks a full-time Professional Mentor to work with eight youth, providing consistent one-on-one time each week and helping them develop emotional skills and confidence.

You will partner with families, teachers, and staff to ensure holistic growth, maintain documentation, and participate in trainings. Start date January 2027; salary $57,717; Tuesdays–Saturdays schedule.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree; Bachelor's degree preferred; or seven years’ progressive experience with children and families.
  • At least two years of experience working or volunteering with children; experience in under-resourced communities preferred.
  • Reliable personal vehicle, valid driver's license, and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Ability to transport youth in a personal vehicle within ~25 miles of the Chicago office; mileage reimbursed by IRS rate.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check including criminal history and driving record.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a minimum of four hours per week of individualized mentorship to each child (caseload of eight).
  • Establish and maintain trust-based relationships with families and communicate with parents regularly.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school personnel to support student growth and success.
  • Assess strengths and areas for growth; set measurable goals with each child.
  • Plan and facilitate enrichment activities and experiential learning to develop skills and confidence.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of youth engagement and progress.
  • Attend weekly team meetings, trainings, and staff events.
  • Safely transport youth to activities in a personal vehicle following safety guidelines.

Education

Associate degree
