Job summary

Mental Health America of South Central Kansas is seeking a Shelter Staff to maintain a safe, structured shelter environment. You will engage guests with a trauma-informed, person-centered approach, supporting independence, recovery, and well-being.

This onsite role collaborates with housing, primary care, and behavioral health providers, and requires strong communication and organizational skills along with thorough documentation and safety adherence.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Proficiency in electronic health record systems.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
• Strong service delivery, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct support to guests in a shelter-based environment, ensuring safety, structure, and consistency.
• Deliver services using a trauma-informed approach to support independent living, recovery, and stability.
• Assist with daily shelter operations, including orientation, meal support, house routines, and sanitation.
• Support guests with skill-building, resources, and coordination with providers.
• Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders to support continuity of care.
• Participate in shift hand-offs and team meetings to ensure consistent service delivery.
• Provide updates to staff on each guest’s goals and expectations.
• Observe, assess, and respond to guest needs; de-escalate and problem-solve as needed.
• Build respectful relationships and encourage participation in services and activities.
• Complete accurate documentation and maintain required logs and reports; follow safety standards.
