Job summary

St. Joseph Center in Los Angeles is seeking a Safety Specialist to support day-to-day participant and site safety at the Skid Row Care Campus.

You will monitor areas, engage participants respectfully, and apply de-escalation techniques to respond to safety incidents and emergencies. The role includes a visible onsite presence, walking throughout the campus, with day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts, and a hybrid work arrangement with occasional travel among Los Angeles-area locations.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in homeless services, behavioral health, social services, safety, security, crisis response, outreach, residential services, or another participant-facing setting preferred.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or other complex needs strongly preferred.
• Experience with de-escalation, harm reduction, crisis response, or emergency response preferred.
• Strong communication, teamwork, conflict-resolution, situational awareness, and ability to follow established safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a consistent, visible presence and monitor assigned areas for safety concerns, participants in distress, and environmental hazards.
• Engage participants respectfully using trauma-informed, person-centered, and nonjudgmental approaches.
• Use trained de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques and request additional support when a situation exceeds the role’s scope.
• Respond within training to safety incidents, behavioral health crises, medical emergencies, and suspected overdoses, and complete required documentation.
