Job summary

St. Joseph Center seeks a Safety Manager to lead participant, employee, and site safety for its Care Campus in the Los Angeles area. You will supervise the Safety team, plan deployments, prevent incidents, de-escalate, and coordinate with partners including EMS and police while upholding dignity and trauma-informed care.

The role emphasizes leadership presence, staff development, and cross-team collaboration to maintain safe environments across multiple sites with occasional travel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Progressive experience in safety, security, crisis response, or related field.
• Supervisory experience with frontline teams.

Responsibilities

• Direct daily Safety operations, staffing, post assignments, coverage, shift handoffs, and team performance.
• Maintain a visible leadership presence across the Campus and perimeter, identifying risks.
• Lead incident response and emergency preparedness activities.
• Coach Safety Leads and frontline staff on expectations and conduct.
• Coordinate with clinical, facilities, security, EMS, and law enforcement partners.
• Use trends to improve deployment and safety procedures.

Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities. The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs. The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

About the Role

The Safety Manager leads participant, employee, and site safety for the Care Campus. The role manages the Safety team, staffing and deployment, incident prevention and response, de-escalation, emergency preparedness, and coordination with program teams, third-party security, and emergency responders. The approach to safety is grounded in dignity, trauma-informed engagement, harm reduction, and appropriate escalation.

What You'll Lead

• Direct daily Safety operations, staffing, post assignments, coverage, shift handoffs, and team performance.
• Maintain a visible leadership presence across the Campus and immediate perimeter while identifying emerging risks and preventive measures.
• Build a participant-centered approach that uses communication, relationship-building, conflict resolution, and de-escalation whenever circumstances safely allow.
• Lead incident response, emergency preparedness, overdose response, documentation, review, and follow-up.
• Coach and develop Safety Leads and frontline staff and reinforce clear expectations, authority, escalation protocols, and professional conduct.
• Coordinate effectively with Client Support, clinical and program staff, Facilities, third-party security, EMS, law enforcement, and other partners.
• Use incident trends and operational information to improve deployment, procedures, staff training, and campus safety.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
• Progressive experience in safety, security, crisis response, homeless services, behavioral health, healthcare, residential services, or a related environment preferred.
• Supervisory or management experience strongly preferred, particularly with sizable frontline teams working across multiple shifts.
• Demonstrated experience with de-escalation, crisis response, emergency procedures, incident management, and staff training.
• Strong situational judgment and the ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in rapidly changing situations.
